Welcome to Barbados

I may be biased but I believe the best beaches in the world are to be found on the island of Barbados where I live. The coral nature of the island has provided us with an abundance of fine white sand, perfect for sinking your toes into, and mostly sapphire blue waters just right for taking a relaxing swim.

There are no private beaches on Barbados. In coastal built up areas there are a number of "windows" to the sea making the beach easily accessible for locals and tourists alike. Where hotels have developed along the coast or where private individuals have built houses provision must be made for the public right of access to the sea.

There are no nude beaches in Barbados but there are enough secluded inlets along our coastline that I'm sure some determined tourists have found just the place to be at one with nature. Nude bathing is in fact illegal in Barbados so the more adventurous tourist should bear this in mind.

The beaches on Barbados can be divided into their coastal locations: the north, south, east, and west coasts. Each of Barbados' coasts boasts different kinds of beaches. Whether you're in the mood for some exciting water sports action, or feel like a more relaxed environment on a secluded beach, Barbados has it all.

The east and north coasts of Barbados face the Atlantic Ocean, where huge waves crash along the shore and coral reefs. Although beautiful to look at the sea is what we call 'rough' in these areas and swimming is not recommended. However because of the waves the area is very popular with surfers.

The waters off the south coast of Barbados are a mixture of the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, and are calm enough for swimming, snorkeling, and other aquatic activities.

Almost all of the beaches on the west coast feature clear blue waters that are ideal for swimming, and clean coral sands on which to relax and soak up the radiant island sunshine.

Over the next few weeks I will take a look at the beaches of Barbados from Crane Beach in the East to Cattlewash in the North. If you’re familiar with our beaches and would like to give your own assessments please feel free to do so.
